Dille & Kamille made their shipping process more sustainable with Bringly
When you say sustainability, you say Dille & Kamille. Since 1974, the Dutch retail chain has been doing things a bit differently: no plastic bags but canvas, no disposable products but sustainable materials. This philosophy is reflected in everything they do, including their shipping process.
"Our concept is not just about the products we sell, but about the entire experience," says e-commerce manager Maykel Willemsen. In 2017, Dille & Kamille was one of the first retailers to start bike deliveries.
Since then, the company has made significant strides in further making their shipping process more sustainable with the help of our Shipping Intelligence Platform. From smart route calculations to dynamic delivery options: together we make sustainable shipping the standard. How does it work? Maykel shares all of it.
From crisis to opportunity
During the COVID period, Dille & Kamille saw their online orders rise significantly. This posed a new challenge: how can you process more online orders without abandoning your sustainable values?
"At that point, we came up with a smart solution together with Bringly," says Maykel. "By using our stores as shipping locations, we could have orders delivered by bike from the nearest store. If that's not possible, we ship from our warehouse, ensuring the last mile is always as sustainable as possible with a bike, electric vehicle, or bus powered by green fuel."
From experiment to success
In the following years, Dille & Kamille refined the system further. They introduced a sustainable shipping option within three working days, which was two euros cheaper than next day delivery. With this, they hoped to encourage their customers to make a sustainable choice.
"We make conscious choices, even if they do not immediately yield the most money," Maykel explains. "We are a commercial company, but our philosophy is at least as important. We want to encourage people to think consciously about their purchases and shipping. Not to force, but to inspire and inform."
In 2024, Dille & Kamille therefore made an even more radical decision: free shipping for purchases over €39 was completely abolished. The result of this was a significant shift. Where in 2023 57.3% of customers chose 'shipping within three days', this increased to 70.4% in 2024. At the same time, the number of next day deliveries halved almost - a clear signal that customers, when well-informed, consciously choose more sustainable options.

Bringly's Dynamic Capabilities Call
But that's not all! In 2024, we also implemented our Dynamic Capabilities Call at Dille & Kamille. This technology determines in real-time which transport option is the most sustainable and efficient at that moment.
The system looks at available means of transport and different shipping locations to then choose the most optimal route. Customers can immediately see at checkout which shipping method has the least impact on the environment.
The Dynamic Capabilities Call operates in three steps:
First, the system checks whether an order can be delivered by bicycle from a local store.
If that is not possible, the system investigates whether the order can be shipped from the warehouse, with the last miles still being covered by bicycle.
If that is also not possible? Then the system opts for delivery via DHL, with a preference for bicycle couriers or electric vehicles.
The impact of this is impressive: the number of bicycle deliveries increased by 124% compared to 2023. For deliveries that cannot be made by bicycle or electric vehicle, the DHL GoGreen program ensures CO₂ compensation. This compensation increased by no less than 91% in 2024.

A partnership for the future
In short: we have come a long way together over the past few years. "I see Bringly as our sustainability partner," says Maykel. "The valuable thing about our collaboration is that they really think along with us. If we have an idea about making our shipping process more sustainable, they pick it up immediately.
We share the same values - I never have to justify why we want to change or make something more sustainable. Bringly understands that and thinks along about the best solution."
