Dille & Kamille made their shipping process more sustainable with Bringly
A sustainable shipping process for Dille & Kamille
When you say sustainability, you say Dille & Kamille. Since 1974, they have been doing it just a little differently: no plastic bags, but instead made of canvas. No disposable products, but sustainable materials. Not just consuming, but recycling. It is therefore not surprising that Dille & Kamille is one of the most sustainable retail chains in the Netherlands. This goes beyond just the products they sell. Behind the scenes, the Dutch retail chain is doing everything it can to realize its philosophy, for example in their shipping process.
The first, middle, and last mile are designed with one goal in mind: to make transportation as sustainable as possible, to burden our planet as little as possible. For example, based on the customer’s location, the size, and the weight of the package, they always select the most sustainable shipping method. And they do this with the help of our Shipping Intelligence Platform. How exactly does that process work? E-commerce manager Maykel Willemsen explains everything about it in this interview.
Prefer to go to the store
As an e-commerce manager, Maykel is responsible for Dille & Kamille's online sales. But secretly, he much prefers it when people come to the store. He explains: “Our concept is not just about the items we sell, but also about the experience. What you smell, see, feel, and hear – that is something we cannot replicate online.
Additionally, it is often more sustainable when people come to us. Of course, not if you have to take the car specifically for it, but certainly if you live nearby and can come by bike. It is fine to use our webshop to check if we sell a product, but in the checkout, we do encourage you to pick it up in the store via click & collect.”
Not for the money
Does this approach always generate the most money? “No. But that is not what it is about. Of course – we are and will remain a commercial company, but we were founded on a sustainability ideal. Profitability is important, but equally important is our philosophy,” says Maykel. For example, he abolished free shipping.
“We mainly want to make people aware of the fact that they should not consume thoughtlessly. It is fine to order something, but wherever possible, try to bundle your products. We encourage this by having standard shipping costs – this way, people will first check if they have truly added everything they need. This costs us revenue, but it aligns with our sustainability ideal.”

Discover how Dille & Kamille improved delivery sustainability and customer experience by partnering with Bringly, utilizing a multi-carrier network for efficient, eco-friendly deliveries across Europe.
Click & collect
Did you place an online order at Dille & Kamille? Even then, they ensure that your package is delivered to you as sustainably as possible. Maykel explains how it works: “During the COVID pandemic, we thought it would be convenient if we could deliver packages from the nearest store instead of the central warehouse.
We arranged that with the Smart Shipping feature from Bringly, they had just started this. We made the stores delivery locations and thanks to the Dynamic Check-out, the Bringly platform ensures that the product is delivered to the consumer via the most optimal shipping method, for example, by a bicycle courier.”
Bringly as a sustainability partner
But it didn’t stop there. Over time we decided that the shipping process could be even more sustainable. "I see Bringly as our sustainability partner. Together we came up with a shipping flow, where packages are delivered within three days in the most eco-friendly way possible.
First, we determine based on the postal code of the buyer and the inventory of the stores whether it can be delivered from a store. If so, the Bringly platform arranges for this to happen using a bicycle courier. If it has to come from our warehouse? Then it happens via an electric vehicle or through a DHL bus that runs on green fuel.”

Challenges
Talk nerdy to me
How does it work technically in our platform? Dille & Kamille is connected to our platform in three ways:
From the checkout with our dynamic capabilities call
From the Order Management System (OMS)
From their Warehouse Management System (WMS)
There is real-time communication for each order via our capabilities call. This determines, based on different parameters (size, weight, customer address, various stock locations), which shipping options best suit Dille & Kamille and this specific customer.
Above hangs our Shipping Intelligence Engine that gathers, analyzes, and benchmarks millions of data points. Both from Dille & Kamille and other connected web shops. In this way, the "engine" becomes smarter and more dynamic.
No more free shipping
In April, Dille & Kamille made a radical decision. Free shipping on orders over € 39,- was abolished. As a result, there was a shift whereby more than 75% of customers now choose ‘Shipping within three days’, instead of ‘Immediate shipping’.

How does Maykel view the collaboration with Bringly? He says: “The great thing about Bringly is that we never have to explain why we want something. Other parties sometimes struggle to understand our choices for sustainability – especially since it doesn't always bring in extra money for us. With Bringly, we never have to justify those choices; they understand that sustainability is a high priority for us. This makes the collaboration very smooth.
Furthermore, we have short lines of communication: every week I speak, as well as other colleagues within Dille & Kamille, with Bringly to discuss a variety of matters to elevate our collaboration to an even higher level. The goal is to deliver our packages to customers as sustainably as possible.”
